Frequently Asked Questions — Penchant Fine Jewellery

Questions?

We're here to help you understand our bespoke process, timelines, and commitment to craftsmanship.

What is the bespoke commissioning process? +

Our bespoke commission begins with a consultation where we listen to your vision, explore your preferences, and understand the story you wish to tell. From there, we create sketches, refine designs, select materials, and craft your piece in our Franschhoek workshop. Each commission is a collaboration—your ideas shape every detail.

How long does a bespoke piece take? +

Timelines vary depending on complexity and current workload. A simpler bespoke piece may take 8–12 weeks, while more intricate designs with custom stonework can extend to 16–20 weeks. We provide a detailed timeline during the initial consultation and keep you updated throughout the creation process.

What is included in a consultation? +

Our consultation is a relaxed, in-depth conversation. We discuss your vision, explore design inspiration, talk through materials and techniques, and provide guidance on what's possible within your brief. There's no obligation, and we want to ensure we're the right fit for your project.

Can I modify an existing design? +

Absolutely. If you've seen a piece from our collection that speaks to you, we can adapt it entirely to your specifications—different metals, stones, dimensions, or personal engravings. We treat each adaptation as a bespoke commission.

What metals do you work with? +

We specialise in 18-karat gold (yellow, white, and rose), platinum, and palladium. Each metal is chosen for its durability, lustre, and suitability to the design. We source responsibly and can discuss ethical sourcing options with you.

How do you source your diamonds and gemstones? +

We work with trusted suppliers and can provide diamond certificates for all significant stones. For custom pieces, we work with you to select stones that match both your budget and your vision. We're also happy to set stones you already own or have inherited.

Are your pieces handmade? +

Yes. Each piece is hand-crafted by our master artisans in our Franschhoek workshop. While we use precision tools and modern techniques where appropriate, the design, shaping, setting, and finishing are guided by skilled hands and decades of experience.

What is your quality guarantee? +

Every piece carries a lifetime guarantee against defects in craftsmanship. We offer complimentary cleaning, polishing, and maintenance for the life of your piece. For any repairs or adjustments, we're here to help.

How do I care for my piece daily? +

Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, exercising, or applying cosmetics. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid exposing delicate pieces to extreme heat or harsh chemicals. Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place, ideally in individual compartments to prevent scratching.

Can I have my piece professionally cleaned? +

Yes. We offer professional cleaning and polishing as part of our lifetime maintenance service. Bring your piece in or contact us to arrange collection. We use ultrasonic and steam cleaning only when appropriate, always prioritising the integrity of your design.

What if my piece needs repair? +

We handle all repairs in-house. Whether it's a bent prong, a scratch, resizing, or a lost stone, we restore your piece with the same care it was created with. Contact us for an assessment and timeline.

Can you resize my ring? +

Absolutely. Resizing is a standard service we offer for most rings. Depending on the design and materials, it typically takes 2–3 weeks. We'll assess your piece and provide details during your visit.

Do you ship internationally? +

Yes, we ship securely worldwide. International orders are insured and tracked throughout transit. Shipping costs and delivery times vary by destination. Contact us for a quote on your specific location.

How is my piece packaged? +

Each piece is carefully packaged in elegant, protective boxes designed to preserve and present your jewellery beautifully. We take pride in the unboxing experience—it's part of the luxury of owning a Penchant creation.

What is your return policy? +

Bespoke commissioned pieces are final. For collection items, we offer returns within 14 days if the piece is unworn and in original condition. Contact us to discuss your specific situation—we're committed to ensuring you're delighted.

Do you offer gift wrapping? +

Of course. We offer beautiful gift wrapping at no extra charge. Let us know the occasion, and we'll make sure your gift is presented with the elegance it deserves.

How are bespoke commissions priced? +

Pricing is based on design complexity, materials, and stonework. We provide a detailed quote after the design phase, before any work begins. There are no hidden costs—what we quote is what you pay.

Do you require a deposit for commissions? +

Yes. We typically require a 50% deposit to secure your commission and begin production. The balance is due upon completion. We're flexible and happy to discuss payment plans for larger commissions.

What payment methods do you accept? +

We accept bank transfers, card payments, and digital wallets. For international clients, we can arrange secure payment options. Contact us directly to discuss the best method for you.

Do your collection pieces go on sale? +

Our collection is priced to reflect the artisanship and materials involved. We don't discount based on temporary promotions—the value of a Penchant piece is enduring, and we price accordingly. Occasionally, we curate special collections or limited editions, which we announce to our community first.
